The Does and Don’t of SEO strategies

As popular as Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tactics are today, many companies fail to understand its basic underlying principles and wonder why their page never ranks at the top. When formatting your Web site to be SEO friendly, there are a few “Do” and “Don’t” pointers to consider.
DO ensure your content makes sense. First of all, never stuff your page with key words. Search engines look down upon overused words and can actually skip your page when indexing sites for a search. They just see it as spam. In order to rank high, your page has to be relevant to your topic and flow. Having just a bunch of words sprinkled throughout your site will hinder your site from ranking at all.
DO make sure your page includes relevant key words. Limiting your content to only one key word won’t help you rank. Research your competitors and find out what supporting phrases they are using and incorporate a good mix of key terms and phrases in your Web site to keep the readers interested and to keep your page ranked high.
DON’T duplicate content. One of the mistakes many people make when formatting their Web sites is to copy content. Search engines see this as plagiarism and will not rank you at all. Try to create new content on an everyday basis and make sure you are coming up with fresh ideas, not recycled ones.
DON’T use unrelated phrases or links in your pages. If your Web site is about affordable event catering, you shouldn’t talk about or have links that direct you to the World’s Biggest Ant Farm collection. Make sure your content stays relevant to your topic, or else you will confuse search engines and your page will disappear into the chasms of the Web.
SEO tactics take a long time to master, so don’t give up. By sticking to your topic, keeping it fresh and updating your work on a constant basis, you will greatly improve your chances of ranking among the top results in a search.
